A GLIMPSE OF FCAWI SPORTS PROGRAM
In 1992, a group of FCAWI parents, some members of the FCAWI Board, started a group to play basketball. Parents started bringing their high school kids and they became interested in playing competitive basketball. We formed two teams and started going to the South shore to play against the FCCSS teams. Because the kids became more competitive, FCAWI hosted the first Filipino Youth Basketball Invitational tournament for 12-17 years old participated by five teams: FCAWI 2, FCCSS 1 & Montreal 2. The idea of this competition was to have the youth from Montreal and suburbs acquire good sportsmanship, friendship and bridge the gap between the newly arrived immigrants and Montreal-born players. It was a cost free tournament. Referees, scorekeepers and timekeepers were all volunteers. During the tournament period, we held an acquaintance party for all the players and friends at St. Kevin's Church. Because of the growth of basketball in the West Island, FCAWI started the Sports Program in 1993 headed by a Sports Director and members.
As a result of the success of the Invitational, PBAM included the youth in their regular PBAM tournaments which is called PYBCOM. FCAWI started participating in PBAM tournaments since 1994 to the present. Bringing home championship trophies for almost every division was a trademark of FCAWI. The future of FCAWI sports is to bring back that trademark.
The FCAWI Sports Program includes basketball, volleyball & softball for all ages. Basketball practice is every Saturday from 5pm-8pm at Lakeside Academy located at 5050 Sherbrooke St. in Lachine. The program runs from September after Labour Day weekend and ends in April of the following year. To join basketball of the FCAWI Sports Program, you must pay a registration fee TBD plus FCAWI membership of $10/family or $5/individual. It is open to everyone (non-Filipino) who wants to learn the basic skill of basketball as well as competitive. Every year, we join the PBAM winter tournament from November to May. We also participate in Invitational Games usually held on Canada Day weekend in Montreal. This season 2014-2015, we are planning to have an in-house league.
Volleyball and softball for all ages is a family affair. We practice during the summer time in preparation for our Annual Tri-city Picnic. It is open to everyone and it is free. Practices are held at Fairview Park along Blue Haven D.D.O. at 7:30pm on Fridays and sometimes weekends, weather permitting.
